The Rainbow Connection is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for children and adults who are mentally and physically challenged. Our goal is to provide physically, mentally and emotionally challenged individuals an opportunity for emotional and physical growth through horsemanship. Our classes and activities take place in an environment that emphasizes abilities rather than disabilities.
Riding a horse gives something very powerful to a person with disabilities. The feeling of achievement that comes from riding and maneuvering a 1,100 pound horse is strong medicine. It turns defeat into victory and self-doubt into self-confidence. Therapeutic Riding is a growing and widely accepted treatment for rehabilitating a range of physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Conditions served include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorders, post-traumatic brain injury, autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, functional spinal curvature, learning or language disabilities, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and cognitive disorders and FAS. Rainbow is a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Accredited Center committed to providing quality therapeutic riding and driving programs in the Anchorage area.

Anchorage, AK, March 25, 2010 – The Rainbow Connection, a local, not-for-profit organization, named Susan DiMaggio as its executive director on March 1, 2010. DiMaggio joined the Anchorage-based therapeutic horseback riding program as its leader after spending the last 28 years at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel & Spa. DiMaggio is a 40-year member of the Anchorage community and is an accomplished equestrienne. Susan and her Saddlebred mare, Mountjoy’s Bright Moment (“Brighty”) were a frequent pair in the show ring in the mid-late 1980’s where they showed in halter and saddle seat performance classes. Susan and her husband, Jim DiMaggio, are currently active in the Anchorage Downtown Rotary Club, where they serve on a number of committees. Susan is also a member of the Providence Anchorage Advisory Council.
DiMaggio brings to the position a strong leadership, organizational and communications background. Annie & Phil Mabry, founders of The Rainbow Connection say, “Susan is a long-awaited breath of fresh air to our organization. Susan’s solid reputation in the community and her high level of management expertise is exactly what we were looking for to lead our program in to the future.”
